Livestream – Permaculture Design Course – Winter 2018

UPI’s first ever livestream of a PDC

We receive feedback several times a month asking if we are planning to offer an urban permaculture learning experience online.  For the first time we are adapting our format to enable anyone with an internet connection to experience the Urban Permaculture Institute’s Permaculture Design Certificate training.

The training will include between 50-70 hours of online livestream interaction with the instructors and other participants.  These online sessions will include live question and answer as well as presentation and individual exercises.  Additionally, the training is broken up into 25 modules with reading, videos and suggested exercises that can be done at your own pace. You’ll see in the schedule below that the livestream sessions are scheduled over the course of 3 months – roughly 2 times per week.

We estimate it will take 3-4 hours to ‘complete’ each module.  Completion means that you have joined or viewed the online livestream session (estimate 2 hours) and reviewed the reading and online links to additional resources (estimate 2+ hours).

Active Design Course

To deepen the opportunity to build design skills, each module will have a “homework” or “extra fun” (we know some people seek therapy due to the word “homework” so we offer an alternative descriptor) assignment that will be optional.  Results of homework assignments can be uploaded to our youtube channel.

Additionally, you will be invited to engage in a design practicum where you can apply what you have learned to an actual site.  Design practicum outcomes can be submitted to the instructors if you would like to receive a permaculture design certificate.

Why Take a Permaculture Design Course?

Permaculture training may just change your life.  This training offers the opportunity to develop professional skills and provides valuable education to enhance your current vocation, prepare you for your next venture and give you inspiration about solutions that you can implement in your life at home. It is one of the few permaculture design trainings that match the schedule and tuition to the busy lives of urban professionals and full-time students.

We believe strongly in the value of “on-life” permacutlure training where you can connect with like-minded individuals and build community in your region while experiencing applications of permaculture design in person.  We also recognize that we want permaculture to be more relevant and accessible to more people.  We view an online learning experience as a compliment to and not a replacement of in-person learning experiences.

We start with the standardized Permaculture curriculum and add onto it insights and strategies for applying Permaculture to the urban setting. This lengthens the course to a degree, we do not omit any of the standard materials.

Tuition Cost

The cost for the course is $500 and runs approximately 75-100 hours over 25 modules and sessions. We value accessibility and never turn away anyone for lack of financial capacity.
